Should I get a hysterectomy?
Best answer:
I've had one just as you describe and for me it was the best thing however I did get three opinions and so should you, you can always go back to original doctor if they all agree. If you do decide to have this done, if possible save the ovaries. The estrogen produced is very protective of bone density.I battled painful periods for decades; I finally had a hysterectomy at 42. I felt ten years younger!!!! I have NEVER regretted the decision for a single day. My recovery time was less than 5 days. I hosted company from out of state the day after I got home from the hospital. I did have a "drive-thru" surgery; I was sent home less than 24 hours after the procedure. JUST DO IT!! My sex life improved alot due to the lack of painful intercourse and no threat of an unwanted pregnancy. If it is interfering in your life, I would say that it would be wise to do so.I had a hysterectomy at the age of 30 and it has been wonderful. No more heavy periods or period cramps. No more planning trips around "that time of the month).
I was in the hospital for 2 nights and was on the couch for about 4 or 5 days. I did not even have to take Tylenol after the first week due to no pain.
Good luck to you and your decision. There are other options for what you are going through. There is a new procedure out there called an endometrial ablation....the Brand name is Nuva~Sure. Here is how it works. With fibroid, a D&C is usually done, to clean out all that, then, with a very fine electrical tool, the doctor/surgeon does a swoop around the uterus and cauterizes the lining. This has " changed peoples lives" so I have heard from the pt's we have treated. Periods are almost not worth mentioning, the pain is gone, the bleeding just drops... Its important to speak with your GYN and see which procedure is best for you. He/She knows your history, and is better at giving you an informed answer.Look up the procedures, ask your Doctor about both. Good luck !!
