The corpus luteum cyst that is making the progesterone then doesn't get the signal it needs in order to keep making progesterone, so the uterine lining is not supported, and it sloughs off so the cycle can begin again. However, if it happened in the reverse order, that would be bad. In the reverse order, the uterine lining would slough off FIRST, before the estrogen drop and lack of another hormone confirmed no fertilization occurred. Thus, a fertilized egg could reach the uterus and find that the lining is no longer good,it's sloughing off and then the fertilized egg would be expelled from the body and no pregnancy would occur. The uterine lining needs to stay there so that the body is absolutely, positively sure no fertilized egg is on its way. It's like the egg is a pitcher, and the uterine lining is a catcher.
