Dr OZ said having hysterectomy removal of uterus only will shut down ovaries?
Best answer:
I assume they think the doctor knows what he is talking about when he recommends a hysterectomy for one reason or another, otherwise, why take out a healthy organ that is not a threat to the body.Removal of the uterus alone does not cause the ovaries to "shut down" unless it is very badly done surgery. You must have received some misinformation or interpreted what your doctor said incorrectly. "50% increase in heart disease" due to loss of ovarian function is very high, Are you sure this is what the doctor actually said ? Insurance companies in the U.S. have become very guarded in paying for hysterectomies because so many had been done unnecessarily in past decades. It is difficult to get insurance approval for hysterectomies now.yh i think its rite.......the body is an amazing machine, and the egg is produced in the fallopian tubes then sent out on the journey to be fertilized in the uterus.

Oprahs experts are not know it alls.
mayo clinic website .Yes, it's true that a significant percentage of women who have their uterus removed end up having their ovaries stop working within a few years. It's also true that a much larger percentage of women have hysterectomies in the US than in Europe, for example. There might be problems, like fibroids, that CAN be treated by hysterectomy. So insurance approves the surgery and pays for it. Howeever, it may be that the fibroids could also have been treated without hysterectomy. In Europe, they might treat it without hysterectomy, while in the US they'll just go straight for hysterectomy, which is much easier on the doctor, though harder on the patient. But the cost might be less for the hysterectomy than for the other procedure, or it could be around the same. So insurance approves it. Also, like, a woman might have a problem like endometrial dysplasia, let's say. Sometimes hysterectomy is indicated, and sometimes not. The insurance company is not evaluating if the problem is grave enough to require surgery. They just say that since it's sometimes needed, and the doctor says that it's needed in this case, then they'll approve it.
And yes, it's true that if your ovaries stop working, that you will no longer be protected from heart disease.
