what is the cost of a complete hysterectomy in the states?
Best answer:
Probably around $ 30,000-$ 40,000. Maybe you can get it cheaper--depends where it's done and by whom and how long you stay in the hospital. It's hard to give you an answer. There are different types of hysterectomy--abdominal, vaginal, laparoscopic, etc.. There are different hospital stays with each, barring any complications. Your stay could be overnight or 3 to 4 days. Hospital costs vary (even in one city). Doctors costs vary. Some doctors include their pre- and post-operative costs. If you have insurance, most doctors will bill your insurance for "all" costs. The hospital costs will not include the anesthesiologist and pathologist fees. If you "need" a hysterectomy, it would be best to be covered by insurance. Also, a gynecologist will not perform a hysterectomy unless he/she deems it to be "medically necessary".
In 2004 I had a laparoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (fallopian tubes and ovaries were also removed) and I spent 2 nights in the hospital. A "rough estimate" of my total costs (which my insurance paid for almost all) is approximately $ 15,000. I live in LA (lower Alabama). My post-operative period was 7 weeks (would have been 4, but I also had some bladder repair, and I didn't want to return to work until I could go back without any restrictions). During those 7 weeks I was getting paid (thanks to accumulated sick leave). If you don't get paid sick leave, you need to factor that into your costs.
